Bizim giysilerimizi asmak için kullandığımız portmanto kelimesi, İngilizce'de (portmanteau) oldukça farklı anlamlara karşılık geliyormuş. Bu anlamların biri de, iki kelimeden oluşan bileşik kelime.
Ama bu bizim anladığımız anlamda bileşik kelime değil, yani Türkçe derslerinin favori örnekleri sivrisinek, biçerdöver gibi değil.
Ne demek bu derseniz şöyle açıklayayım:
Wikipedia = Wiki + Encyclopedia
Motown = Motor + Town
TomKat = Tom Cruise + Katie Holmes
Portmanteau kelimesinin bu anlamda ilk kullanımı, Lewis Carroll'ın Through the Looking-Glass kitabında görülmüş. Carroll, Alice Harikalar Diyarında'nın da yazarı aynı zamanda. (Ayrıntılı bilgi için iki yazı önceye gidiniz.)
Bu bileşik kelimelerin kullanımı ilk kez bahsedilen kitapta Jabberwocky adlı bir şiirde geçiyor. Bu şiir birçoklarına göre İngilizce'de yazılmış en iyi saçma şiirmiş.(Wikipedia'nın yalancısıyım.)

Mesela şiirdeki frabjous kelimesi "muhtemelen" şu kelimelerin bir "portmanto"suymuş: fair, fabulous ve joyous.

"ceket asmalığı" gibi bir anlam oluyor aslında. ingilizceye de fransızcadan girmiş olmalı.
